'Parallel Lines' was a fun song to write because it was very heartfelt and based on personal experiences. Of course, it's in 6/8 time, which makes the song bob along nicely too.
Growing older has its unpleasant moments but overall comes a greater clarity that can help transcend experiences that have shaped me in the past and have hung around like an old enemy. And this song is about this process.
Parallel lines meet in infinity or, in other words, never. We are told this in school, but for the sake of simplicity and generalization, school doesn't always tell the whole story. That's why sometimes reality teaches us differently.
In this case, without telling us they simply assume a flat surface. However, because our earth's surface - and in fact the universe as a whole - is curved, parallel lines do meet at a given point in the distance (in space and time).
So metaphorically, if you have made bad decisions in the past, let people down and walked away from things that looked too difficult to deal with, like I have done a few too many times, you have gone onto a parallel trajectory assuming you will never face it again. But it's always there in the distance.
Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of courage to bend space and time enough to set things right. And when and where the lines meet, we hear tremendous and utterly benevolent explosions so colourful that dwelling on the mistakes of our past becomes a very monochrome and pointless experience.
